The zoo was founded in 1930 by George Mottershead, who was motivated to have a zoo without bars. Today a multitude of living creatures (over 5000) live in the open, almost natural enclosures. Penguins that can be viewed underground, splendid gardens, and a waterbus are just some of the many features of the zoo. One of the proudest accomplishments of Chester Zoo is the raising of Jubilee, the first elephant to be born and reared in England. Open daily (except Christmas Day). Address: . Chester, England CH2 1LH
