Deva Experience + My Favorites
Deva (pronounced Dewa) was a Roman fortress established 2,000 years ago on the banks of the River Dee, later to be built upon to form the city of Chester. At the archaeological dig area, visitors can see layers of mediaeval, Saxon, and, at the bottom, Roman remains. The hands on area is accessible to those wishing to try on a realistic Roman suit of armour, or touch animal bones and pottery. Open all year. Roman Amphitheatre + My Favorites
Of great interest to many is the partially excavated remains of the Roman Amphitheatre, the largest military amphitheatre in England. Built during the late
70s AD, it is thought to have been used for military trainings, as well as entertainment events including bull-baiting, the slaughtering of wild beasts by huntsmen, gladiator shows and public executions.
